Happy 2018, SG peeps!! I hope it’s been a great one, thus far!
I’ve been a bit on the “down-low” for a few weeks… but, I’m back and ready to go!
Now, I know that talking about “trends” for the new year is nothing new. You can’t go anywhere on social media without seeing countless posts about what’s gonna be hot or not for the upcoming seasons. But, I think it’s fun! And, when you’re a boho babe, it’s really kinda cool to see what fave pieces or accessories are going to have staying power through the next cycle.
What is important to remember about trends is that they are just that… trends. They’re not hard fast rules, or requirements for you being on the boho bandwagon. Nor, are they a substitute for your own personal style, which as we know, is where the free-spirited bohemian influence actually stems from… being free to be you. But, it’s just kinda cool to see where this whole boho-chic thing is going, and what kind of influence it continues to hold among the mainstream fashion houses and social media influencers. And, if you’re anything like me, I think you’ll totally dig what’s hot for 2018.
So, buckle up, Buttercup! Put on your heart-shaped sunglasses and let’s go for a ride!
Also, let me know which of these trends are something you’re already doing, or would consider doing. Is there anything on the list that is new to you? Or, maybe haven’t tried yet? Let me know in the comments.
This may not be a shock to anyone. Feathers have long been a fashion staple for the free-spirited style. They have weaved their way in and out of the boheme consciousness for years, like the ocean tide. But, they always seem to find their way back to prominence within their boho influence. They cycle in and out… earrings, headpieces, and handbags, all have succumbed to being embellished with these beautiful little expressions of flight and fancy. Delicate yet strong… mirroring the bohemian spirit.
What makes this year’s feather influence different is the use of metal fabrications. This time around, cast charms make for amazing necklaces and cuff bracelets. And, no worries with broken or bent feathers. However, you’re still going to want some of the real deal, for sure!
So, get your feathered freak on!
So, I think I know what you’re thinking… “What’s new about fringe?!” Well, there’s a LOT that’s new with fringe in 2018. For starters, it’s more embellished than ever. There’s fringe on fringe. And, designs on fringe. And, charms on fringe. It’s absolutely fringe-tastic!
No longer will you only find fringe on bags and shoes. But, now it’s on EVERYTHING! Even dusters!! Coats, skirts, the updated kimono… and, earrings and bracelets. Whether it’s a piece of clothing, or an accessory, you can bet your lucky stars above that you will find it with fringe this year. And, that makes me quite happy!
(These fringed beauties are available in my SGV Collection at Emily Way. Just a way to add a simple touch of fringed fabulousness without it over powering you or your outfit. You can click on the pics for descriptions.)
#3: Denim on Denim
OK, don’t freak out… it’s not that scary. Denim on denim is a trend that anyone CAN wear, if done right. The secret? Mixing washes. Yup! that’s all there is to it. If you don’t want to look like you’re wearing the proverbial denim tuxedo, just be sure to mix up the shades or washes of your denim pieces. Pair a white denim jacket with a dark wash pair of jeans. Or, a distressed light washed denim skirt with a dark washed pristine denim button down. Or, as in the example above, the same wash, but one piece with a differing embellishment. You get the picture.
#4: Large Retro Florals (60’s Inspired)
This is a really fun and funky trend that speaks to my creative soul. But, no worries, you don’t have to wear head to floor floral to take part in this whimsical display of color pop. Pants, tops, scarves, even some handbags, are now sporting this happy and vibrant trend. Find your one piece that you feel comfortable with, and wear the heck out of it!
These lovely floral pieces, above, can be found at Emily Way. Also, don’t forget to thrift! Some of the most amazing retro pieces can be found at your local thrift store… if you’re willing to take the time to dig for treasure.
#5: Straw Hats and Bags
Straw/Jute hats and bags are EVERYTHING! Especially when it’s warm. Lightweight and just plain easy to wear. Maybe it’s because I live at the beach… but, there’s something to be said for an amazing straw bag and hat. They are not cumbersome. They are not heavy and bulky. They just exude an easy, breezy, no-fuss attitude that just works.
It’s the easiest way to look put together with minimum effort. You’ve gotta love that!
#6: Wide-Legged Jeans
Now, I know that for some of us, this might not be the most flattering shape. I’m all of 5’1″, so I get it. However, I still love wearing me some over-flared or bell-bottomed jeans. I just have to be sure that I’m wearing my 6″ platform clogs or cork strappy wedged sandals while doing so.
#7: Get Your Amethyst On!
Purple, lavender, and amethyst are HUGE this year! Whether in clothing or accessories. If you don’t feel that shades of purple are good for your complexion, go with varying hues in your accessories.
#8: Sheer Fabrics
Sometimes, there’s a trend that just seems to be a no-go for most. And, that would be the case for sheer clothing. But, there is a way to incorporate this look into your wardrobe if you want to take part in it. There’s nothing wrong with throwing on a tank underneath, or using a colorful bralette to layer with. I actually like to do that, because the under garment becomes another accessory for me. But, I know this isn’t for everybody.
And, before you say it… it doesn’t matter your age! Every trend can be made “age appropriate.”
#9: Bonus Trend!
Overall, if it’s from the 70’s, it’s hot, hot, hot! So, grab the fuzzy vests, large sunnies, flowy skirts and dresses, as well as anything authentically 70’s inspired… or, just dig up some vintage perfection! It’s gonna be a free-spirited romp through the decade of LOVE. So, peace out and have fun!
I hope you enjoyed this wrap up of boho trends for 2018. What do you think? What’s your fave? Let me know in the comments.
Have a fab day, and I’ll see you, next week!
